MARKET NEWS
🎯 Debt is overtaking equity in African startup funding
Newly released research has revealed that African startups raised $705M in Q1 2026. But the details of these deals showed a marked shift: debt and hybrid financing accounted for more capital than equity. Nearly a third of deals involved debt, and growth-stage companies raised the largest rounds, particularly in energy, mobility, fintech, and agriculture.
What this means for founders and SME leaders:
Equity is no longer the only path - debt is becoming normal for growth.
Investors want revenue and proven models before writing big cheques.
Infrastructure, energy, fintech, and logistics are attracting large funding.
Growth-stage companies are winning — scale and unit economics matter more than hype. The funding market is maturing - moving from “raise at idea stage,” to “raise when you can scale.”
Founders should start thinking about funding as blended finance: equity + debt + grants.

🌍 Why WhatsApp health startups are going to win in Africa

Africa has a history of leapfrogging technology.
Instead of building bank branches first, Africa went straight to mobile money. Instead of desktops, Africa went straight to mobile internet. A similar story is emerging in health.
Government programs like MomConnect in South Africa reached millions of women using simple mobile messaging, showing that basic mobile platforms can scale nationally without complex infrastructure. Now many health innovators are with services using a platform millions people across the continent already use every day — WhatsApp, especially to reach underserved populations.
This isn’t a workaround. It’s a different model of healthcare delivery. This is what leapfrogging looks like in health: not copying Western systems, by building something different, faster, and more accessible.

FemImpact Africa is on a mission to spotlight and supercharge the founders shaping Africa’s future — especially women and innovators building inclusive solutions in health, wealth, and climate. With male founders still capturing over 80% of venture funding, inclusive and impact-driven startups need more visibility, support, and connections. We bring together stories, curated funding, accelerators, and a pan-African community to help these founders thrive.
As founders ourselves, we started this network of changemakers and innovators shaping Africa’s future because we passionately believe in the power of innovation emerging from this continent. Now we need the world to take notice!
